The story

New York, the 1950s. Tom Ripley, a man with no money and a gift for imitation, is sent to Italy to convince Dickie Greenleaf to come home.

Dickie's life is everything Tom wants: the sea, the jazz, the boat, Marge. Tom is welcomed in, then tolerated, then shut out. And Tom doesn't take being shut out well.

Why it's on the programme

why this one.

It's the dark side of the Italian dream the cycle celebrates: the same sun, the same sea, seen by someone who will never belong. A perfect last film before the after.

Scene study

“Tu vuò fà l'americano”

In a small jazz club, Dickie pulls Tom on stage and they sing together. It's the happiest Tom will ever be, and the moment he decides he can't go back to being himself.

Did you know

the fun fact.

The village of Mongibello doesn't exist: it was shot on the islands of Ischia and Procida, in the Bay of Naples. The story had already been filmed in 1960 as Plein Soleil, with Alain Delon.

Who would you pretend to be for one summer?
