The story

In a small beauty salon in Beirut, Layale is in love with a married man, Nisrine is about to get married with a secret, Rima falls for a client, Jamale refuses to get older, and Rose, the seamstress next door, has given up on herself.

Between appointments, hot sugar wax and gossip, the salon becomes the one place where they tell the truth.

Why it's on the programme

why this one.

It's Nadine Labaki's first film, before Capernaum, and it shows Beirut through its women, with humour and tenderness. The salon is a majlis: exactly the kind of room this club wants to be.

Scene study

The caramel

The film's title is the sugar paste the women heat and use for waxing. Sweet, burning, a little painful. Labaki builds the whole film on that image.

Did you know

the fun fact.

Caramel was Nadine Labaki's debut as a director; she also plays Layale. It premiered at Cannes in the Directors' Fortnight in 2007 and was shot in Beirut.

The post-credits question

Where's your salon, the place where you say everything?

The question we'll ask at the after. Think about it on the way home.
